Amarant could barely feel any part of his body. His arms were pretty much useless from the constant clanging of swords all day every day. They were also covered in cuts and bruises from his mistakes in battle, though he had to admit, they were starting to come less and less as he grew stronger. He was starting to become one of the better swordsman's in the village and everyone knew it. While it did help his pride, it came with the price of having to prove himself more often, and he often felt the repercussions of that price. He felt drained, as usual, and he did not know why. The rumor was that they had magicians who were constantly draining them of their power, but that seemed a bit too far fetched, even for them.

His tent slowly came into view and a wave of relief washed over him. When he had first came to the planet, the tent was small and dinky and he never could get rest, but now it was like a kingdom. The small cot inside was his favorite place in the entire galaxy and the few hours he was allowed to sleep at night where his favorite, until the nightmares came. For the past few nights he had been having terribly vivid nightmares about his mother. They came when he was at his most tired and that was when they were most vivid.

He did not think about it long, though, and as soon as he walked through his tent he crashed on his cot. He did not even take time to remove his clothing or his sword from his sheath. He thought back at the day, a small grin forming, he had proven himself yet again this day. He had only lost one spar and that was because he had been sparring for near five hours straight. He was hungry, tired, and drained and a much weaker opponent had seized the chance to defeat him which resulted in the nice little cut on his left arm and the throbbing in his head. It did not matter, he would let the man be confident for now, and tomorrow he would be destroyed. Those were his last thoughts as he drifted into sleep.

*******

The room was dark and Amarant had no idea where he was. He searched frantically for a light but he could not find one. He tried to calm down, but for some reason, fear overwhelmed him and he could not tell why. Suddenly, he spotted a light down a long corridor and he ran towards it as fast as he could. It seemed like the hallway was never going to end but he kept running as quickly as he could. Finally he reached the end and he came to a door that was halfway cracked open. He was not sure why, but just looking at the door made him want to run away in fear, it was almost like he had been here before. Slowly, he pressed the door open, and he slid his head in. There, on the bed, was his mother as she lay dying. Instantly he ran into the room, but the scene changed as soon as he walked in. The door behind him shut and the room turned much more sinister. His mother was now sitting up straight and staring at Amarant, eyes he had never seen before, eyes of a dead woman.

"Your fault...."

**********

He awoke with a start, sweat pouring down his head, and it took him a few seconds to gather where he was. He was still in his tent and he realized the sun was starting to come up. Once he figured out where he was he laid his head back down on his cot and thought about his dream. They did not seem like dreams, they seemed so real, but he had no other explanation for it. It was too late to go back to sleep but too early to go out and do anything so he found himself just laying in his cot until the time for training was upon him.

The cloaked figure of Maximus walked unceremoniously into the territory of Clan Vashti - the largest currently in existence on Endelaan.  The elder Sith Lord recalled their history from so long ago when he still reigned over this and so many other lands.  A thin smile came to Maximus' lips as his silver-green gaze probed the early-morning light of Endelaan.  From time to time, Maximus heard the whispers that were still uttered throughout the planet.  History was a difficult thing to destroy and there were still many stories passed down from generation to generation.  For this reason, he had a tendency to stay completely out of the public eye.

When he was though, he did what he could to remain low key.  The cloak of his tattered brown cloak was drawn low over his eyes, and he did his part by completely cloaking his force signature.  To do anything else would be akin to firing a flare directly into the air, alerting even the weakest of force users to his location within Vashti territory.  Recently, Maximus' great great granddaughter had asked him to manage the training of a new aspiring Warrior in the absence of the foolish boy that she still longed for...even in his death.  In truth, it was the very least he could do.  He had already refused her any assistance in bringing the young Diomedes back among the living.  Though...Maximus did wonder what the boy's father was playing at by assisting young Nessarose.  No doubt, Cameron Centurion could have done the entire action on his own.  Over time, the Warrior had come to realize that Cameron had adopted much more his great grandmother's scheming than Maximus had previously thought.  It was curious...Jhereg and Alathor had shown very little talent for the finer arts of manipulation at all.  It gave Maximus hope that Elora just might be...what was required.

Arriving outside the small tent of one Amarant deWinter, Maximus turned his nose as if he'd just sensed something completely foul.  An offspring of Jonathan deWinter...  Maximus wondered if he shouldn't just bleed the boy dry and do the galaxy a favor by removing an aspect of Jonathan deWinter's genome from it.  Without uttering a word, the Sith Lord swiftly stepped inside the sleeping quarters.  Silver-green eyes peered out from beneath the hood of Maximus' cloak as he visually evaluated the man.  He looked like all new fighters...weak...frail...beaten...pathetic.  "Collect your weapon and shield.  We depart immediately."  Saying nothing further, Maximus exited the tent and went to stand by a horse that, officially, belonged to no one.  It was not a wild creature of any sort either.  By the standards of Endelaan, that made it sub-par...and to ride one was almost an insult.  To a recognized Warrior, that was.  To a fighter of horrible stock...it was fitting, granting him neither acclaim nor attention of any sort.

Amarant found that he could pass the time by going over a few move sets in his head and figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of each. Of course it was nothing compared to actually practicing them but it was a good way to visualize any weaknesses they may have. He rarely found anything of use when he was thinking, but it was a good way to pass the time, and it did not exactly hurt his technique either. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps coming towards his tent. This was odd to him because Amarant was usually one of the first people up, and even if he was not, no one ever came to his tent. None of the fighters really talked to one another outside of training.

Without warning a man entered the tent and Amarant shot up in his cot, his hand instinctively went to the handle of his sword, but he quickly realized it would be no use. He could feel the power surging off of the man, and if he wanted to, he could have killed Amarant without so much as a second thought. Amarant hated that there were so many other people in the galaxy who could cut him down just as easy as they could pull a weed from the ground. In the grand scheme of things he was nothing and no matter how hard he trained it always seemed like there was one other person out there. This did not discourage him, though, it made him hungrier and more willing to train.

The man told him to retrieve his weapons and Amarant did not hesitate. He was still in the same attire as he was from the day before, but he did not dare waste the time to change, he grabbed his shield and he departed from the tent to see the man standing by a horse. Amarant had, since he had come to Endelaan, become much more adept at riding them. He remembered when Nessa brought him to the planet he could barely get on one but now he was actually able to ride one without the assistance of another.

He was not sure how to approach the man. He seemed very direct and to the point and Amarant did not want to speak out of turn less he be punished. "Where are we off to, my lord?" He did not make eye contact and he called him lord because that was what he had been taught to do. He had fought it, at first, but after a few beatings he had finally given in. It was not worth the bruises and cuts when he needed to be on top of his training.

"Mount the horse.  Ride four miles into the forest.  You will come upon a small clearing containing a sword with a leather hilt and dark blue blade stuck into the earth.  Do not touch the weapon - merely meet me there."  Without saying another word, Maximus seemingly vanished into thin air.  The precious few that had seen him often questioned whether he was a man or a spirit.  The truth would no doubt shock many...even the Queen.

It was not long before the elder Sith emerged in the clearing - well before Amarant would be able to arrive.  Taking a seat by the sword of Diomedes Antares, the Sith Lord closed his eyes and began to meditate quietly.  In the seclusion of the forest, he allowed the full strength of his presence to flow forth.  If necessary, Amarant could use it as a guide.  Laying in the grass beside Maximus was another alchemical Sith Sword - this one containing a burnt orange blade.

The man did not give Amarant a chance to say anything, not that he would have been able to, and when he vanished Amarant just stared in the spot where he had been. Amarant could only shrug his shoulders and mount the horse, he had seen so many things lately that whenever something new happened he just brushed it off. He knew he was getting into a world where unexplained things would happen over and over again and questioning them was not going to help him. He figured if he waited, in time, he would get all the answers he wanted. Patience was his weapon and he used it as wisely as he could.

The trip was arduous and not an easy one. Though he was better at riding horses now, the one he was riding was weak and did not have the gallop that it needed to go the pace Amarant wanted. It bothered Amarant but there was nothing he could do, at least nothing he thought he could do. His energy was weak and he knew he could aide the horse via the force but he did not want to show up any more drained than he already was. Better the horse to die than for Amarant, at least that was how he justified it.

It took him a little over twenty minutes to get to what Amarant believed to be four miles but once he was there he did not see a sword. He slowed the horse down and he reached out with the force to see if he could get a feel for any sort of presence. Amarant immediately felt the man's presence, it was very strong, and he headed off into the direction. It did not take him much longer to get there and when he did he saw the man meditating next to the sword he had spoke of. Amarant dismounted from his horse and he stared at the blade, wondering what was special about it. Then his eye was caught by another blade that lay on the ground beside of the man. Amarant was more intrigued by this sword than the one in the earth, but he could not explain why. "I have never been this far out before." He said off handedly, not really talking to anyone, but trying to let it be known that he had arrived. "The swords, they are special, are they not?"

Maximus slowly opened his eyes and pulled back the hood of his cloak.  As his silver-green gaze stared intently into Amarant's eyes, the Sith Lord cracked a thin smile.  "They are no ordinary swords.  Forged out of the fires of darkness and infused with the potency of Sith Magic, they easily best practically all weapons.  Including lightsabers.  You will unlock the secrets of their creation one day, but that day is not today."  Falling silent, the Sith Lord casually came to his feet.  Holding out his right hand, Maximus waited briefly for the hilt of his weapon to fly swiftly into his grip.

As he grasped the hilt, the Sith Lord flourished the weapon briefly.  Contrary to popular belief, Sith Swords did tend to carry a bit of weight, requiring considerable strength to wield accurately and powerfully for extended periods of time.  Today, Amarant's training would officially begin.  The pathetic sword play games he'd been engaging in were great to build confidence, but they would not construct a true Warrior.  In the absence of the new King, the Sith Lord would see that his armies were prepared for what was yet to come.  "Forget everything you have done.  Whatever victories you may have obtained...mean nothing.  You have never faced a real enemy.  Your enemies will likely show you some element of quarter...I will not.  Attack."

Amarant listened with intent as he talked about the swords. For so long he had been craving a lightsaber but now his focus shifted to that of the Sith sword. He wanted one, almost as much as a lightsaber, and when he was told that he would not be learning their secrets this day his heart sank. He did not dwell on it long, it was not worth wasting his time over, plus the man had stood and summoned his own sword and stood in a defensive position. Amarant would have been a liar to say that he did not feel fear surging through his body. But, the fear was mixed with something else, something familiar. He had, up until now, been into quite a few battles and every time he felt fear and adrenaline, but most of all, excitement.

He pulled his sword out from its sheath and he lifted his shield. This battle would be, without a doubt, the hardest to date. Despite the odds, Amarant would not back down, he wanted to prove that he was worthy enough to stand before the man and receive his training. He had learned early that fear could be used to feed his strength and as soon as it began to course through him he latched on to it and turned it into energy. He was going to need as much of it as he could muster. Amarant tried to find a weakness in him, anything, but it was all for naught. Any weakness the man presented was probably a distraction and he would easily chop him down. He decided on a few basic moves, mostly to gauge how the man was going to fight. He came in quickly with an overhand swing and he kept his shield at bay in case he went for the stomach. After the overhead swing he would attack with very quick flurries to try and keep him on the defensive. Amarant needed to buy as much time as possible.

Maximus did not even flinch from his position as Amarant launched his attack.  Technically, there was nothing egregiously wrong with the man's technique or control over his aggression.  There was a great deal wrong with the man's lack of regard for that which he could not see.  Through the Force, Maximus motioned his left hand almost imperceptibly, sending a strong wave of force energy crashing into Amarant's body.  The Sith Lord waited to see if the man would crumble and allow the force attack completely remove his momentum, or if he'd use it to rebound into a new attack.

Without waiting for whatever the result would be, Maximus spoke in an even tone.  "Your opponents will not all be skill-less fools, pupil.  The Jedi are many things...incompetent does not tend to be one of them.  Launching into an obvious overhand attack when your opponent has nothing to focus on but you is...beyond foolish.  You must destabilize them first...use the Force and your physical attacks at the same time."

Otherwise...Amarant was in for a long ride.

Amarant did not even see it coming. The force wave hit him directly in the chest and sent him flying backwards, knocking the breath out of him, and sending him crashing into a tree. His sword fell from his hand, at some point, and the only reason the shield remained on his person was because it was strapped to his forearm. It took him a moment to gather himself, but he did not stay on the ground long, quickly checking to see if the man was going to attack him while he was down. With his shield up, he reached for his sword, but he realized he was not coming after him. In fact, he was in the same position he had been in when Amarant attacked.

He let out a breath and pulled himself to standing position, using the pain in his chest from being impacted so hard to fuel his energy, a technique he had learned under Nessa. The man spoke, and Amarant listened, but at the same time he was deciding on his next course of action. It was obvious that the man was stronger than he was, so Amarant was going to have to try a more indirect approach. As soon as he was done speaking Amarant flung his arm in a manor that would send his shield flying at the man, the shield was sent much faster thanks to the force, and as it was on his way Amarant began to sprint at the man.

He was right behind the shield, and he hoped to use it as enough of a distraction to at least engage the man with sharp and quick attacks. He had to think of something quick while he was attacking.

Maximus held no reaction to the boy following instructions.  He naturally expected this, but he'd also hoped the boy perhaps had a bit of natural talent in the art of combat.  In Maximus' opinion, the boy was far too reliant on quick, flashy moves.  It was no secret...well...  In the past it had been no secret that Maximus favored quick, decisive strikes over pure brute force.  However, he had learned through the pain of battle that a balance was required to have even a modicum of hope in a conflict against some of the galaxy's finer warriors.

As the shield came hurtling in Maximus' direction, he actually took the time to briefly shake his head before erecting a barrier of invisible energy around him and expanding it outwards to meet the shield.  Once the shield collided with the barrier, it would simply rebound in the direction it had come with only slightly less speed.  That direction of course being...directly at Amarant.  Still grasping his weapon, Maximus waited to see what the boy would try next.

"Tricks will not lower my defenses at all, boy."  Hopefully Amarant was getting the picture that he should spend a bit more time completely immersing himself into the strength of the Force and less time worrying about sword play.  That was of course of critical importance to advance, but his role was not to merely be some sword-swinging canon fodder.  The Path Amarant was on...he was needed to command large amounts of regular warriors in battle.  To be such a crushing force that none dared to even get within reach of his sword.

In the end - it did give Maximus an idea of where he would need to begin with the boy.  From the very beginning.

Amarant almost did not have time to block the shield from hitting him, but when it rebounded towards him, he sent his sword flying into the air and his sword clanged hard on the shield, sending it flying over his head. Amarant stopped, frustration and anger starting to flow through him, and he listened to the mans words. He had no idea what he was talking about and he racked his brain as hard as he could trying to figure out what he wanted. Only three months ago Amarant had been nothing more than a smuggler and now he was being taught all of these new things that he had never heard of before. For the first time since he had come to Endelaan he felt overwhelmed and hopeless.

His anger and frustration was clouding his judgement, and it was messing with his concentration, which was making it harder for him to keep a stable connection with the force. He had to pause for long enough to clear his mind, and then it hit him, he was trying to teach him to stop trying to work with the force and let the force do its job. He remembered Nessa telling him about letting the force just take over, and he had thought it crazy, why would he turn himself over to something he did not trust? But now, he knew the force, and he knew it would not steer him wrong. He just had to find the perfect balance, and do as the man said, find the perfect balance between the force and his attacks.

He closed his eyes for a moment to touch the force with his mind. Usually, when he touched the force, he tried to control it but this time he did not. He let it flow freely through him and his eyes shot open in surprise. He felt stronger, faster, and it all seemed to make a little bit more sense now. He raised his arms up and gave them a tiny look before he attack. He shot forward with speed and power he did not know he had, and his arm moved without him even knowing it, it was like the force had taken over and was fighting for him.

Maximus watched the boy for a moment.  Arching a curious brow, the Sith Lord managed a sly smile as Amarant came to...not precisely the correct conclusion.  As the boy came bolting towards Maximus with speed that could only be influenced by the Force, the Sith Lord motioned with his left hand to send a small ball of Kinetite hurtling rapidly in Amarant's direction.  This time, Maximus waited for the attack to take effect.  First...a bit more theory, then they'd get to the business of physical contest.  The boy could, of course, attempt to dodge the attack, but the Kinetite had a tendency to expand as it traveled.  Either way, his attack would be forced to either halt or change long enough to make Amarant vulnerable.

"No, boy.  You fail to understand the underlying point.  When you face an opponent that is far more skilled than you, you cannot attack them whilst they are completely prepared.  The Force is a gateway to many things.  As a Warrior, it must be a weapon as much as any blade.  Be unpredictable.  For instance - the attack you recently attempted with the shield.  It failed only because it came from the same direction as yourself.  Use the entire battlefield around you.  It must become your world, your home.  Manipulate it as such."

Really - if Amarant simply through a large log at Maximus from another direction with enough speed, it would force the Sith Lord to shift his attention long enough for Amarant to at least get within striking range.  Once you managed to get an opponent engaged in either hand-to-hand or melee combat, it was hard for them to break from it...assuming you never relented.  That's where physical conditioning and skill merged.

Amarant's frustration mounted when his last attack did not land, and instead, he was hit by a blast of kinetite energy. He tried to avoid it, but it was too late, and it hit him in the shoulder and sent him spinning in the air. He landed hard on the ground, again, and his sword slid from his grip. He let out an annoyed grunt, sand puffing up in his face, and he slammed his fist hard into the ground. He did not want to get up, he was tired of all of the shit, but he knew he had to. He could not lay there, that was not his job, his job was to get up and do exactly what he was told. He reached out for his sword and he forced himself up again to face the man and he listened to him, frustration and anger surging through him.

While he was talking, Amarant was scanning the area around him to see if there was any way to get the upper hand. It hit him halfway through his speech what he was trying to get him to do, and it made sense to Amarant. He did not move for a few seconds, building his concentration and trying to figure out a way to engage the man. He had failed a few times in a row, but this time, he would not. Amarant reached out with the force to a tree limb that he could easily tug off a tree.. He gripped it tightly, and within an instant, he sent the sword flying in the direction of the man. As soon as he sent it flying, he used the force again to send the dirt in front of the man high into the air, like an explosion. He then took off in the direction of the man and jumped through the dirt, trying to use the other two distractions to get the upper hand on him.

Maximus permitted himself a pleased smile as a flurry of attacks all hit him at once.  Amarant had accurately taken his advice.  There are only so many things an individual can focus on defending themselves against when they also have to be ready to counter the unpredictable.  It was the very reason that remaining on the offensive was so critical.  After all, action always beat reaction.  The Sith Lord was able to dodge the large log easy enough.  However, as he dodged that attack, the explosion served to disorient his sense of sight long enough to quite literally lose sight of Amarant.  In that instant, Maximus relied merely on the Force, but his pupil was moving fast.

With a brief twirl of his right hand, Maximus brought the orange blade up into a guard position and immediately met the boy with a tight, viscious strike towards his left shoulder.  Now...the fun could begin.

Their blades hit and Amarant felt a sense of relief wash over him. It was not that he wanted to engage the man in battle, he was much stronger than Amarant, but he was tired of failing to initiate anything. It was a relief to feel something he was familiar with, the clanging of swords off of one another. It took much concentration to block the man's attack, something he normally lacked when it came to battle. He always believed himself stronger than everyone so he never took the time to actually focus on their attacks. That was not something he would be able to do against this man, and if he did not rely on the force, it would be a short battle indeed.

Amarant planted his foot and moved to the left and he slashed his sword at the mans right shoulder. He did not aim for it to hit, he wanted to get the man's sword into a position to where he would be open. He dashed back to the right, constantly moving so that he would not only have to focus on his sword, but also Amarant himself. He was quick and he used it as a tool in battle. He jabbed his sword at the mans stomach, trying to move his sword back and forth across his body in the hopes that he could, just maybe, tire him out.

Maximus permitted the boy to have his game of quick, superfluous strikes.  The elder Sith Lord barely broke a sweat as he effortlessly manipulated his sword to block Amarant's attacks.  Despite Maximus' ease in the engagement, Amarant was doing fairly well.  However, another learning point was upon them.  In a brief moment between strikes, the Sith Lord released a strong repulsive wave of the Force from the very core of his body.  The instant Amarant was about to be thrown into the air, Maximus would leap into the air immediately behind him as he brought his sword around, preparing to strike the young pupil the instant his body had found the earth once more.

Amarant thought he was doing well, a little too well, and it was as soon as this thought crossed his mind that he was let down yet again. The wave hit him and sent him flying through the air, except this time he was more used to it and could maneuver himself better, and he landed on the ground on his knees. He felt something incoming, and when he looked up, he saw the man coming down towards him. Amarant barely had time to move out of the way, and he was not graceful about it, rolling on the ground and then shooting up quickly. Amarant built up the force again, knowing he was going to have to distract him to get back in, and he sent a force push at the man. He aimed it at his legs, hoping he would try and jump over it, and Amarant came back in with another flurry of attacks.

Maximus sensed Amarant's attack perhaps a split second before it was released.  However, he'd learned the hard way through his own training that attempting to dodge invisible waves of energy by leaving the ground never tended to end well.  It left a person far too exposed, and there was no telling what would happen next.  Instead, Maximus allowed the force attack to meet his legs.  Immediately, he could feel the force of the impact cause his body to begin to topple over face-first.  Dropping down to the ground, Maximus was immediately drawn into a vulnerable position.

Having dropped his sword, the Sith Lord remained motionless, curious as to whether or not it would entice the boy to deal a critical blow or grant mercy.

When the man fell over, Amarant was not sure what to do. At first, he thought he had actually made the man go down, but how could he have? Amarant was much weaker than the man and there was no way he could have defeated him so easily. Immediately, he labeled it as a trap, and decided on a different approach. He used the force to sling the mans sword away from him, at least out of reaching distance, and if he used the force to call it back Amarant would have enough time to react. He wondered if he should attack the man, knowing full well he would not be laying there for no reason.

"I am no fool," Amarant started, pointing his sword at the man as he was in the position of weakness. "What tricks do you have up your sleeve now?" He was sure if he tried to attack him, he would have some sort of plan laid out. Normally, Amarant would not have let someone live if he got them into this position, but the man was much stronger than anyone he had ever face before and he knew he could not have defeated him. "And who are you, to have so much power? How come I have never heard of you before?" He was feeling braver now that he stood over the man, but it would not last long, Amarant had a feeling.

Rolling onto his back, Maximus gazed up at his pupil and raised his hands innocently.  "You have won, young Amarant.  I congratulate you.  Now...if you'll kindly let me up, we will continue your training."  Or perhaps...the training had yet to cease?  Regardless of Amarant's response, Maximus offered him a brief explanation.  "Who am I?  I am your teacher.  Is that not sufficient?"  Allowing a thin smile to touch his lips, Maximus elaborated only slightly.  "I assure you that you've heard mention of my name...assuming you've been initiated into the history of this world."

Slowly, Maximus began purposefully gathering in the strength of the dark side around him.  However, he did not in any way dissipate the energy.  If Amarant was paying attention, he would notice this.
