Set Fire to the Rain (Trial by Fire; Celeste)
« on: 07/31/13 08:15:17 »
It was time. These moments always came when children were in question. It was no Celeste's turn. While there were many teachers on Dathomir to train younglings but as her mother before her, Lauda took the training of her children under her guidance. It was tradition. And as a mother, Lauda understood very well why it was so important.

As Ma'dri waited for her in the meditation room, Lauda did the same now. It was a good place to begin, especially since this location itself was incredibly important for the future of Celeste's training. Collecting the scrolls necessary for the day, Lauda waited for her young daughter to join her.

Tiny Celeste was among the quieter children of the Cavataio family. Never feeling the need to raise her voice or peacock around just to stand out, she'd taken to more or less a near silent existence as her big dark eyes studied everything around her with an intensity nearly unmatched.

Her curls sat perfectly down her back, the result of the slaves pouring over her extra appearance, ensuring her look was befitting to her position. Out of Dathomir, some would call her a princess. But the child knew better than that; she was the granddaughter of a goddess and a scion to a family that would have generations more to go before anyone even considered for a heart beat that they might or might not be under this or other existential conflict.

With her tiny hands, she opened the door to the meditation chamber, where her mother was. Normally, the child would rush along to bury her face into her mother's leg, but she could feel that something was different today.

Staring at her mother with an intense look, little Celeste nodded her head. Whatever it was, she was ready.

Her head turned as she heard the doors open, her daughter there. A small smile appeared on her face as her head gestured for the girl to join her. "Come, Celeste," Lauda called for the girl to join her. It was time, yes. But first, it was also a time for questioning. Moving over in front of the desk, she leaned against it as she waited for her youngest to join her.

"Do you know why you're here, hi'ja?" It was a simple question. There was no punishment entailed if Celeste didn't know the answer. It was only the beginning and this was no test where her daughter could succeed or end. Lauda just wanted to know whether she needed to explain it or if her daughter had read about the Trials.

A smile. A question.

Celeste did not let herself answer immediately. This was the meditation chamber. It wasn't a room for games, or one of the many places around the castle that she could play. Not to mention that madri would not have asked her if nothing was about to happen.

She had seen them; men and women (though mostly women), skilled Witches, affecting the lives of Dathomir day in and out, women like mad'ri, like nona. People that she already knew expected her to grow to be like them and somehow still herself.

Growing up as a scion of the Cavatatios entitled her to many priviledges. And to many imprisonments as well.

"It's time for my Trial," Celeste said after a long silence, her voice stating a matter of fact, and very little emotion.

Time for her trial. Lauda smiled, this time a little wider as he nodded. Yes, that was the correct answer. Like herself and others of their blood, Celeste arrived prepared to this moment. Which was also very important. "And do you know why you have to have your Trial by Fire?"

Again, Celeste preferred to wait a moment before answering. She knew that the trial did not have to be by fire. There were other clans and other families that chose to go about it differently. But not them. Never them.

"Because I am a Cavataio," she said, her stature straightening up a touch more, revealing the family pride.

This time, Lauda chuckled to the response. It was frankly just a bit adorable. Really. Her daughter, so young, thinking they did the trial because they were Cavataio, with her little back straight. "As much as I like that answer, Celeste, and I do very much," Lauda told her daughter plainly. She liked it, she really did. But that was not the answer. "Try again, Celeste. If you don't know it, you can ask."

"I don't understand," was her answer. The girl's insides were turned upside down now. Not because she was a Cavataio? Why then? They were all witches, witches of Dathomir. Those who could not witch their ways around and use the Force barely counted for anything. And it didn't have to be fire - any spell that didn't include fire could be used for it as well. "What?"

"Why do we have our Trial by Fire?" Lauda asked her question calmly. She did not show any discomfort by needing to repeat it. The answer to this question was as important as being able to pass the Trial. A Witch had to know why she was doing it as well.
