Lol.

Poor Hayden Christensen though.  Seriously, the dude gets ripped on all the time for something that wasn't even his fault.

George Lucas' writing did not help, but Hayden Christensen is one of the worst "actors" I have ever seen. It's every bit "his fault" that we claim it is.

He's a fine actor, leave him alone.

I enjoyed his performances in Life as a House and Shattered Glass.  The fault lies in the script, the directing, the pacing, the editing, the concept... just about everything except Hayden Christensen.  It would have been no better even if they'd gotten fucking Kenneth Branagh to play Anakin.

It's entirely possible to take George's wooden writing and turn it into something a bit more palatable. Obi-Wan's actors did it in both [/i]halves of the series. Harrison Ford did it like a boss by telling George fucking Lucas to shut his trap and let him act. Hell, even Natalie Portman managed to salvage most of her scenes. It really is only [/i]Anakin that fell through, both in acting and in lines. The latter is George's fault.

The former? There's only one person to blame.

*cough*

Natalie didn't. This was her worst performance in her entire career, especially in Episode 3.

I said "salvage," not "shine." That was Liam Neeson.

Call it a difference of opinion, then.  I thought both Obi-Wan and Padme were incredibly boring and sterile characters, no better or worse than Anakin.  And Ewan McGregor is a fantastic actor.

Harrison Ford's case was during a time when George Lucas had less overall control over the project, and had more people around him to restrain some of his more questionable decisions.  Such was not the case with the prequels.  George Lucas had complete control over every minute detail - which is why they turned out the way they did.

Boring characters are problem A.

Inept actors are problem B.

The two don't necessarily have to do much with each other

Not sure what you're getting at.

Guys, I love Liam Neeson too, but seriously?   Episode I was probably one of his worst movies of all time.  Again, through no fault of his own.  Qui-Gon Jinn was one of the stupidest characters in Star Wars.

I'm getting at the fact that boring characters and bad actors' performances are not one and the same

You're right.  But the prequel characters were boring because they were also poorly written.  Even great actors like Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson couldn't make us like or care about their characters.  Hell, the prequels even made Samuel L. Jackson completely uninspiring.

So leave poor Hayden alone.  George Lucas deserves blame for everything, because he was responsible for everything.  Watch some of the behind the scenes footage of the prequels.  He tells the actors where to stand, when to turn, where to look, right down to how to deliver their lines.  Meanwhile they're standing in a sterile blue room with absolutely nothing at all to work with.

I don't care who you would rather have seen filling Anakin's role.  It still would have sucked.

I don't know how or why Lucas imagined Anakin Skywalker as a petulant teenager, but the 'human' side of Star Wars was never Lucas' strength.  I just pretend that Anakin was portrayed by a young Hugh Jackman, because that just makes more sense.
