On the Subject of Force Alignment and “Switching Sides”

Star Wars: Descension is what is known as a freeform roleplaying community. That means that unlike MUSHes, the Star Wars Combine or SW Galaxies, it is possible for your character to do pretty much anything that remains within the realms of plausibility.

Below is information on Force Alignments and Character Advancements.

Force Alignments

While we accept any type of Force user characters at Descension, there are three general alignments that are trainable from apprentice/padawan to Masters within the factions. These alignments are Lightside, Neutral or Darkside. The Force orientation a Force User leans towards to generally relies on the faction they choose to join.

A character's Force orientation restricts which powers they can and cannot learn. To explain this in a technical fashion:

Lightside PowersNeutral PowersDarkside Powers

Neutral CharacterX

Darkside CharacterXVV

A note on Neutral Force Using Characters (also known as “Force Practitioners”) – these characters are restricted to learning the neutral aspects of the Force only as they do not follow or necessarily believe in any one alignment. As a result, Force Practitioners lack the strength of connection to one side of the Force to manipulate light or darkside specific powers.

Examples/Definitions of Lightside, Neutral, and Darkside Characters:

**This list is not all-inclusive, but it does represent the major sects present within the Descension Universe**

Lightside:
Characters that generally manipulate Force for purposes of good and are aligned with honesty, compassion, mercy, self-sacrifice, and other positive emotions.
  • Jedi – Refers to Jedi characters that follow the practices of the Jedi Code and believe in or belong to a unified organization of Jedi.
  • Rogue Jedi - Refers to Jedi characters that follow the practices of the Jedi Code but do not necessarily believe in or belong to a unified organization of Jedi.
  • Lightside Witch - Refers to lightside influenced members of the Witches of Dathomir sect that follow the precepts of the Book of Dathomir.
Neutral:
  • Force Practitioner – Force Users who do not follow any of the dominate . These types of characters most often join neutral-aligned factions that take no stand in the Force Users’ wars, such as Jedi vs. Sith.
  • Neutral Witch - Member of the Witches of Dathomir that does not draw influence from the lightside or darkside but still follows the precepts of the Book of Dathomir.
Darkside: Characters that primarily manipulate the Force as a means for greater power through raw emotions like anger, rage, hatred, fear, aggression, and passion.
  • Dark Jedi – Refers to Jedi that do not follow the practices of the Jedi Code and believe in the strength of the darkside of the Force. These characters are not Sith and cannot manipulate abilities from the Sith Arts.
  • Sith - Refers to a darkside character that upholds the Sith Religion, has received formal training in the Sith Arts, and is a current recognized member of a group upholding and following the Sith Religion.
  • Rogue Sith - Refers to a darkside character that upholds the Sith Religion, has received formal training in the Sith Arts, but is not a current member of a group upholding and following the Sith Religion.
  • Darkside Witch - Refers to darkside influenced members of the Witches of Dathomir sect that follow the precepts of the Book of Dathomir.
Changing Your Character’s Alignment

Many characters tend to take the writer’s decisions over and develop a life on their own. Sometimes important factors that greatly affect the character’s development take occur. One of these factors, the one we’re going to elaborate on here, is what happens when your character switches alignments.

While switching a character’s alignment is possible and welcomed, there are some temporary concessions your character will have to go through in order to maintain a certain amount of realism, and these will have to be played out.

Switching from Lightside to Darkside, or Darkside to Lightside
If you wish to make this switch with your character, your character will lose all the alignment specific powers that came with the original alignment.

Switching from a Force Practitioner to Lightside, or Force Practitioner to Darkside
If a Neutral Character decides to hop off the fence and join a certain side, they need only seek out a trainer of the relevant alignment and begin said training.

Switching from Lightside to Force Practitioner, or Darkside to Force Practitioner
The character loses the specific alignment powers they had before. For instance, a Sith Master turning neutral will become a Neutral Master.

And that's it!

Happy RP'ing!
